some problems i received by mail, maybe you have the same problem:

I've found this http://www.gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_X850XT_ATI_Drivers page
just before returning the card to the dealer because I couldn't get it
to work under Linux (xorg, base suse9.2 and a suse9.3 patched to the
latest and greatest).

The card is a Sapphire x850 Pro for AGP, lspci reports it as 4b4b and
4b6b as primary/secondary adapter with subsystem dev ids 0312/0313.

I tried ATI's 8.20.8 linux package, without success. I've tried patching
the lib*.a once, again with no luck.
you should go through the steps and try if you get it working!

Are you aware of anybody running a x850 pro/agp with xorg? Or is ATI's
statement "Note: ATI RadeonĀ® X850 AGP products are not supported." on
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.20.8.html
correct?
i think this card should work with this patch described

The root cause of the problem I'm facing is most likely that the fglrx
module doesn't load at all. In all cases modprobe/insmod come back with
a simple '[fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!'.
this error means that your driver has not found a suitable card in your system, your patch do not work. You should give it another try with another ChipID

Well I followed your instructions on your gentoo wiki page for the X850
Pro, however no go. The driver loads just fine, but startx(fce4) won't
work due to the ChipID. However the keyword ChipID isn't supported by
ATi anymore.
there was an error with this howto if you use driver version > 8.20, article is "now" up to date

It took me hours to
find out why the kernel module works fine after the hexedit step, but X
still failes to start, because the error message from the xorg server
was not a good help. It always complaints the secondary pci id.
Did you select "Big Desktop" in fglrxconfig? Try it =)
