Talk:HOWTO Use MythTV
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Yes, I know theres another MythTV howto on here, but I want one that covers the basics of actually configuring and using MythTV on a Gentoo box, hence this article. The title doesn't seem to really fit it too well, but I couldn't think of anything better.
I really don't mind if someone contributes to the page (despite the warning on it), its just that I've just barely started, and while some of it is complete, I don't have the general layout on there just yet. SDibb
Today I first time configured mythtv (knowing nothing about it). I learned, setting it up is much more complicated as sendmail (known to be a naightmare for years).
This article is completly useless, since it doesn't help me at all. If I find html doc included in source tarball at beganning, I save a lot of time.
Contrary to the pointless comment above, I found this howto to be very useful. Good work.
It's impossible to tell exactly which article you have seen. A specific article title or URL for what you have seen would be helpful.
Have you seen this? It seems that would suit your needs for configuration info. (The site search is your friend.) HARDWARE Setup MythTV
If so, where is it falling short for your needs? Perhaps the discussion page for that article would be a more appropriate page to post about what additional info you're looking for.
You might also check out the mythtv-users mailing list. The list isn't specific to Gentoo, but there are some rather knowledgeable Gentoo users on that list that might be able to help. dlim
[edit] mythtv - no, thank you
This article did not help me at all. I tried to configure 0.18.1-r1 several times and it still does not work, so my option is "unmerge" and I will never return to mythtv anymore. I was not able to fetch the TV listings, define my TV channels, configure /dev/sound/dsp as a sound device (/dev/dsp reports Error opening audio device) and many more.
For me, this software is not finished, or its port is untested. I do think that this port should be masked or removed from Gentoo.
By the way, I am sure that coders of this software should improve their product. Why do they need mysql for some silly data? I am not sure whether they ever heard about configuration or data saved in files.
Sorry to hear some people are having problems. Let me point out though, the Introduction: "This HOWTO assumes you have already installed MythTV with the default settings, your hardware is working correctly, and want to know what to do next."
Setting up mythtv can be a pain in the butt, but it's worth it. In the end though, its only another third-party application that uses your hardware and its setup. If you can't get it working at all, then it's not going to matter whether youre trying to use mplayer, tvtime, freevo or mythtv. Emerging mythtv will not magically fix any hardware issues you haven't already resolved.
For help with hardware stuff, look at the hardware mythtv setup howto or check forums for your specific setup, not the "how to use mythtv" article. SDibb
In the channel setup bit you don't mention that you have to exit mythtv-setp and start mythbackend before running mythfilldatabase. At least thats how it works for me, I'm using DVB cards and mythtv-setup can't access the cards when mythbackend is running, and mythfildatabase won't work without mythbackend running.
Its worthwhile pointing out, as it states in the article, once you've emerged mythtv you should have set mythbackend to run at the default level, using the command rc-update add mythbackend default. If you've not yet rebooted your linux box you'll need to run /etc/init.d/mythbackend start
Make sure whatever you've got set as your video storage directory (/mnt/store by default) actually exists, and that the relevant users have permissions to it. If mythbackend can't see it or write to it it'll not start. - Garp
I took off the Under Development tag since its been so long since I've been able to come back and finish it up, and some people might be interested in making changes.... so, feel free. I will eventually try to put up some more stuff, once there's time of course. SDibb
[edit] MythTV Section
I've added you to the MythTV template group now. I'm trying to consolidate the Myth info on the wiki. --Ghettodev 12:41, 16 November 2005 (GMT)
