What does the line
-s (O/../../5/11|L/../../5/13|C/../../5/15) \
do? I cannot find anything about it in the smartd.conf-manpage. Furthermore the smartd does not want to start when this is in the config.
try here: http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/man/smartd.conf.5.html if it doesn't work, try emerging the unstable version... i had a similar problem with version 5.26
with version 5.30 (actually masked) the -s option works ;)
halting the system is pretty harsh.. I would think broadcasting the error message (via "wall") and perhaps executing a backup of key files would be a more suitable response. --68.249.79.186 16:22, 23 Dec 2004 (GMT)

I think the use of -M to execute the shutdown script is abusing the intentions of that option. It's intended to give an alternate script for sending mail. The least the shutdown script could do is send mail in addition to writing to a logfile. ectospasm 2006-08-06 22:04 (GMT)

To whoever wrote this part: "Carefully read the SMART instructions for your motherboard. Sometimes this option maybe intentionally hidden, as shown in this example.", thank you! I've got a Gigabyte k8nsp and didn't get SMART to work. You've made my day. =)
