[edit] Deletion discussion

While a full course on MPI might be out of place, a "getting started" guide is great and doesn't take much in the way of resources. The problem with this howto is it's name. Rename it to something reflecting its purpose: Getting started with MPI on Gentoo.

Tell us what we need to get started, tell us how Gentoo MPI does or doesn't differ, and give us a couple more simple examples so we know it works and have some idea of how to use it.

Links to more indepth info are great too for into that is truely beyond the scope of the Gentoo howto's.

If someone is willing to provide this, I would in favour of it. However, if there is nothing Gentoo-specific needed, the page should be removed.

I vote in favor of fixing this and against deletion. But specifically, it should address how to configure Gentoo for MPI use There are currently 65 packages in sys-cluster, a significant number which seems to deal with mpi, and I would want this page to explain which packages to emerge and why. It also should discuss Gentoo configuration (/etc/ files) for setting up the cluster. Finally, a non-Gentoo specific hello world type program seems appropriate as a way to test the configuration.

I'll be working with this a little bit this fall, and if I'm successful will put this howto together. If someone has suggestions on what to include, and things to watch for please email me at alunduil@alunduil.com. I've been working with MPI this summer, and a site like this would have been exactly what I was looking for. I'm thinking this for an outline (let me know what you think):

  • Installation
    • Packages
    • Configuration
    • testing
  • Writing the first program
    • What is MPI?
    • How do we use it?
    • The first program (example)
  • Testing the que, etc.
    • submitting jobs, and getting the results
    • More advanced programs
    • Reference sheet of MPI variables commands etc.

I am interested in clustering and use Gentoo's ebuilds for mostly everything (almost) cluster related, I agree that a getting started with MPI on Gentoo is needed as its the only reason I have been reluctant to try it out. --DP110 17:17, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

It's true that it shouldn't be deleted because otherwise there will not much to discuss on the gentoo wiki but only the specific commands to gentoo and that's not much :)

Codeslinger 11:19, 15 October 2007 (UTC) Well it's been a year without any updates and that is sad. it is a topic that I am interested in.

I concur that this should not be deleted, it is a legitimate part of the section on HOWTO Configure Gentoo Linux for Clustering. Once you've got the cluster how do you verify that it is working and how do you use it??? Even if it is just a stub with some good links to useful resources it would be good to have around.

goblin 23:05, 19 March 2008 (UTC) I vote for not to delete it. If not beeing Gentoo-specific is a reason for deletion, you have to wipe a lot of good contributions. It is quite small and incomplete, but a good starting point if someone wants to write about MPI with C.
