  • get a conflict between vmware-modules and dbus
  • at the moment every ebuild of vmware-server is ~x86. Should this be noted in the howto?

[edit] updates

  • vmware-server can be installed on a headless system without any problems. there are no gtk or X dependencies.
  • vmware-mui is working without copying any libs to other locations. Extract the mui archive -> execute vmware-mui installer -> copy /etc/vmware/init.d/httpd.vmware to /etc/init.d/ -> DONE

^-- Yes this works. Suggest rewriting the MUI install to reflect on these changes and remove the library links.

[edit] Cleanup

The "old and broken stuff" should be removed from the page in my opinion. The wiki got history for it's pages if anyone would need it. And it just cause the page to become messy. If no one objects to this I will remove it. --AnMaster 11:09, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm confused about the comment of being able to install vmware-server on a headless system with no X dependencies. If I try to install it, portage comes up with

[ebuild N ] x11-proto/xproto-7.0.10 USE="-debug" 140 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/kbproto-1.0.3 USE="-debug" 57 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/xextproto-7.0.2 USE="-debug" 67 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/xf86bigfontproto-1.1.2 USE="-debug" 37 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/inputproto-1.4.1 USE="-debug" 49 kB [ebuild N ] x11-libs/xtrans-1.0.3 USE="-debug" 101 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/bigreqsproto-1.0.2 USE="-debug" 36 kB [ebuild N ] x11-proto/xcmiscproto-1.1.2 USE="-debug" 36 kB [ebuild N ] x11-misc/shared-mime-info-0.19 582 kB [ebuild N ] x11-libs/libXau-1.0.3 USE="-debug" 225 kB [ebuild N ] x11-libs/libXdmcp-1.0.2 USE="-debug" 216 kB [ebuild N ] x11-libs/libX11-1.1.1-r1 USE="-debug -ipv6 -xcb" 1,393 kB

In addition, the wiki claims the vmware-server-console is not needed, but that doesn't make a lot of sense. How would I create virtual machines let alone interact with them? I run a different box dedicated for vmware server then use the console on my workstation to acctually use it - this is probably what they meant by vmware-server-console is not needed.
