The Reason $MIRROR/file does not work is you have a trailing / in your mirror, so it comes out to be http://mirror.xxx.com//files/file.blah, instead of http://mirror.xxx.com/files/file.blah.

In addition, I'd reccomend reiser3.6 at least for /home... most of your work is there, the speed increase will help.

ext2 is fine for /boot... why would you need it journaled?
