[edit] GDesklet

A good choice to make Gnome look neater, is to emerge gdesklets-core [1].

You can make all sorts of great looking windows on your desktop... try it ;)

Screenshots can be found at [2]

[edit] Fonts

How about changing the default application fonts to something more attractive than 'sans'? Even Verdana looks a bit better.

[edit] Broken link

The link to the Clearlooks ebuild is broken...

[edit] Maybe something other than Clearlooks?

Clearlooks is a pretty nice theme, but there are some irritating things about it (it's tinted beige/green/whatever, and it gets a little tiring)

The theme that I use, ThinMint (Full disclosure: I am the author of the theme. But that doesn't mean that it isn't good!) is simple without being banal, and it's one of the only themes that I've used for more than two weeks straight.)

It's avaliable on freshmeat [3]

Note that, contrary to the "gtk1", it it a Gtk-2 theme.

[edit] Gnome beautification "à la" Manu Cornet

I like how Ubuntu modified Gnome to be mor epolished. For example, Manu Cornet's modification on the exit dialog is great. A better Gnome menu too is avaible. Did anyone ever worked on this for Gentoo??

I see a lot of the Manu Cornet things have been integrated already in offical gnome:[p]
1) Add applets dialog is searchable
2) Exit dialog is much friendlier (they didn't use icons because they weren't very tactile)
3) Panel seperator added
As for the gnome menu, I think the community is leaning towards Novell's SLAB

-> i second that ... could someone please see if this is possible. I tried looking for 3rd party packages with no avail :,-(

[edit] Slab

Slab is a Menu system developed by Novel and looks like this.

Ebuilds are avalible but you will also need NetworkManager by Gnome that can be found more about on the Gentoo Forum.

Network manager is in portage. You just need to unmask it.
