Talk:HOWTO AMD64

IMHO, this page is worthless. It is deceptive; this isn't a how-to for AMD64. Its just a few (very outdated) sparse tips. Stubb or not, it's rather useless.

Please feel free to make suggestions for improvements. (Note to other readers: This is a really old comment and the page has likely been much improved already) --AllenJB 21:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Isn't mplayer32/gmplayer32 supposed to be mplayer-bin/gmplayer-bin?

Yup. Fixed. --AllenJB 21:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

The $LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH should include *both* the 32 and 64 bit lib versions ...before I put in the 64 bit version as well, direct rendering for 64 bit games and apps didn't work (which is a REAL bugger!). So the line should actually be: export $LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH="/usr/X11R6/lib32/modules/dri:/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri"

[edit] 32binchmod reference

the concept of using /etc/init.d/gentoo32 is something that I like. I have a question though. Why is the series of mount and umount statements sent to the background with the final "&"? How would the eerror macro know that there was a problem if it is running before the previous step is finished???

Just curious

[edit] Firefox and aoss32

When following the ALSA firefox/flash tips here, I was subjected to a fair amount of audio-video lag when watching flash movies. A quick google revealed a alternate method that seems to work without said lag. Rather than invoking aoss32 in firefox's launch command, you export the environment variable FIREFOX_DSP="aoss32" and leave the firefox invocation alone.

It works fine for me, but I would like someone to verify before making it public canon. Mainly because I see no reason why one should work better than the other. FYI, I'm using ~amd64 firefox-bin-2.0

[edit] Firefox and Sun Java

Strengthened the warning. #gentoo et al. will not be able to help users who bypass portage in manners such as this. I would recommend the removal of the section entirely, but that is my personal opinion. Hlieberman 00:37, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Firefox and nspluginwrapper

I added something accordingly to the article, as for me nspluginwrapper perfectly works :) +1 here.

[edit] RE: Radeon 3D-acceleration in 32-bit programs

Don't quite understand the export path:

export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib32/modules/dri

There is no directory /usr/X11R6/lib32/modules/ on my system. Are you supposed to create this directory? I noticed that the modules directory exists in the lib64 dirctory though. Some clarification would be helpful here. Thanks.
