[edit] Can't configure :(

HOWTO to configure windows XP to share printer via LPR? I turn on Services as in this article. But from another mashine i can't see printer (from cups). Maybe i need to configure somethinf else?

Printer is HP LaserJet 6L.

I get "Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" when trying to print using the print services for unix method. More on this once I investigate further. --Covracer 12:07, 26 May 2005 (GMT)

TJ: I second that! More a hoseto than a howto.

[edit] Maybe some details...?

Click this, click that, type this, enter that. Reads like written by Microsoft. Are the old times of comprehensive Linux documentation done? There's no X on the host where I want to use the printer. No click for me. What entries in what files should I edit?

While this article should perhaps provide the detail necessary for non-web-based CUPS configuration, you can use the web-based cups interface via links/lynx. --Covracer 11:36, 26 May 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Several points improving this guide

Several points for improving this already wonderful guide on printing to WinXP Servers.

1. The last step (i.e. downloading the PPD file and copying it into /usr/share/cups/model) should be moved to the very first step, because the default drivers often give very bad printing quality. You should get a PPD file specifically for your printer. Then, you can see it in the Make list later.

2. If you've set the "Print Services for UNIX" on WinXP, there is no need to install SAMBA and start the samba deamon. Just use lpd://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/printer_name.

3. If you can download a PPD file, you possibly need not to install the foomatic stuff.

  • I noticed the pxl1010.ppd requires foomatic be installed, this may apply to others. Are you sure point 3 is valid? - euphor][a

Oh, then point 3 is not valid to all brands and models. -sunyy

[edit] Wrong way to set useflags

In the section If your printer isn't on the Make list it says you should use:

USE="ppds" emerge gimp-print

That is wrong! You should use the /etc/portage/package.keywords:

echo "media-gfx/gimp-print ppds" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

Can somebody update the section? I don't have time now.AnMaster 21:08, 1 December 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Samba with lpd?

"Option 1", which is not particularly Samba-based, suggests that you must nonetheless install Samba. Is this right? I suppose it won't *hurt* anything, but I don't understand why it would be necessary here. --Bart Massey 2007/12/28 04:54 UTC
