Install pidgin-mpris, which is a pidgin plugin that can get track info from MPRIS-aware players.
You can find a gentoo ebuild in the overlay stored at http://hg.atheme.org/users/majeru/portage-overlay/
Restart pidgin, then configure the pidgin-mpris plugin as you like
Set %now-playing as your pidgin status
