THIS IS STILL A STUB. MORE INFO WILL COME SOON I HOPE, ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED
The main problem with making Linux run on the Playstation 2 is that there are several versions of the original Playstation 2:
-For example, the slim PS2 doesn't have a hard-drive; so you can't install Gentoo on it. It is an unusual architecture so live-cd distributions (such as Knoppix) won't run. So developing a live-cd for these models is necessary to get Linux running.
sorry , but the (older / bigger) PS2 _does_ have space for a harddrive , see http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/
-Another solution is to run Linux on a USB drive

Installing Gentoo on a Playstation2 will require you to buy the Linux kit from Sony which is now off the shelves in the U.S. and other places will soon, if not already, follow. A modchipped console will allow installation from a non-official disc. This is required for the boot loader that is on the discs. Once the Sony Linux is on the disc you are free to replace it with something else such as NetBSD, blackrhino linux (deb based) but preferably Gentoo. I've not tried this yet but this node has given me the idea. I'll keep you all updated when I give it ago. My goals will be net booting over nfs and running mythtv to watch movies and episodes on my server.
