My experience on a Dell Latitude CSx

[edit] Introduction

The Latitude CSx is an older, slower laptop that is light, sturdy, and slim.

I feel that in order to get the most of of this system, we need to push for speed. Although this machine is several years old, we can still squeeze some life out of it if we try hard enough.

Considerations:

  • This is not a workstation or server.
  • This machine has no graphics system to speak of, so sophisticated eye candy is virtually out of the question
  • With that said, what laptop is worth showing off without at least 'some' eye-candy?
  • The CSx has no cdrom, floppy drive, or network interfaces. Such devices are external, and can be mounted or configured as necessary. Why waste precious boot time on auto-mounting something that gets plugged in once a month?
  • To my knowledge, this CPU does not support cpufreq

Goals:

  • Boot-up to desktop in less than one minute
  • Minimal battery consumption
  • Anti-aliased 'everything' on this LCD
